Master Series: Greg Heisler on Photography Techniques
Every few months, Profoto has the pleasure of interviewing an accomplished and highly regarded photographer to bring you their passion and knowledge of light shaping. This collection of interviews makes up the Master Series.
The latest addition to the Master Series features New York-based photographer Gregory Heisler, renowned for his technical mastery and iconic Time Magazine covers, to name just a few examples.
In this third video Greg talks about the importance of not relying on proven techniques. He also talks about the importance of finding your own expression.
“The last thing you want to think about when taking a picture is other pictures,” says Greg. Solid advice.
The fourth video will be posted in two weeks. In case you missed the first or the second video, they are still available here and here.
You can see more of Greg’s work at his website. He is also a frequent Twitterer.

What an inspiring video from Greg. Photographers, myself included, are too quick to follow trends and norms and never get to create our own trends for others to follow. Thats probably why photography may have lost some of its zest as there are very few original “creatives” left, and too many followers. Thanx for this lesson.
One never stop paying your dues..

Greg Heisler is a wonderful teacher and seems so kind. I am learning photography after a career in banking. His words and advice on being “in the moment” and his analysis of how to create each portrait was so helpful. I also appreciated his reminder to enjoy the process and taking each photo. I tend to be critical of my new skills and worry if this is even an appropriate path. However, when I enjoy the people or scenery and I relax for even a moment, I remember that I LOVE photography! Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Linda
I totally agree with you Greg has a calm and kind air about him and is so inspiring and reminds us all that photography is a gift and also has to be worked at. I have been a photographer for over 30 years and it is still the greatest path in the world to follow, every day you learn and see something new, you are constantly searching and watching the light, it excites, inspires and challenges you. Keep going, keep exploring and keep enjoying

Another great interview with a true professional, really inspiring, exactly how it is, when the curve ball comes at you, you have got to try and hit it. I agree with Hendre Louw and include myself, as photographers we have to break with trends and push ourselves to come up with new ideas and test our creative juices and above all enjoy and be passionate about picture taking
