Profoto Moshe Zusman Moshe Zusman: How to Light Up a Room

In the January issue of Rangefinder Magazine, Moshe Zusman shared his techniques for getting “consistent lighting throughout the wedding day.” His aim is “to help fellow photographers move beyond natural light and embrace the beauty of combining strobes and ambient to make the perfect engagement or portrait shot.”

For this, he counts on his six Profoto D1 Air 1000w monolights.

When you begin to explore and understand the physics of photography, it’s a wonder you don’t hear about more engineers who are avid photographers. The end result of the practice of photography is art, but the practicality of the technology is all about science and engineering. Then we have Kenneth P. Volpe, who straddles those two disciplines to create impressive photography.

Volpe, a native of Northern New Jersey, has a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a Master of Engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. A short talk with him reveals he knows what’s going on inside a camera, but that doesn’t mean he can’t create art with one. He actually reads the instruction booklets which come with photography gear, and he reads them closely. (more…)

If a photographer’s task was limited to saying “smile” and pushing a button, being a wedding photographer would be the easiest job in the world. But as we all know, this is not the case. On the contrary, creating memorable wedding images can be difficult, since many weddings appear similar on the surface, and the photographer has to dig deeper to reveal the unique personalities behind the white dresses and rented tailcoats.

Swedish wedding photographer Mickael Tannus knows this as well as anyone.

“I don’t have a problem with stepping outside the box,” says Mickael. “I love to take two or three or perhaps ten step away from it. Not in every picture, obviously. Then it just gets silly. But on some, for sure.” (more…)

Being rewarded for your efforts is a nice thing. Marcus Bell was recently reminded of this, when he made it on to American Photo’s prestigious list Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the World.

“It’s an amazing honor,” says Marcus. It’s like our own little Oscar’s for wedding photographers. I’m really excited!”

Marcus has earned his stripes. In fact, he has been working as a wedding photographer for more than 13 years, but judging from his palpable enthusiasm, the job has just gotten better by the years.

“I don’t even think of myself as a wedding photographer,” says Marcus. “Still, that’s what I end up photographing most of the time, because it’s what I love. As a wedding photographer, you get to be a part of all these amazing moments when people celebrate with their family, their friends and the people they love. There’s so much emotion. It’s like a treasure chest for a photographer, really.”
