MASTER SERIES: Gary Land: From Full-time to Freelance

Watch to find out how Gary Land went from full-time to freelance and rose to the top

Gary built his career from the ground up. Working in film labs, managing Reebok’s photo library, becoming their full-time photographer, he always had a 9-5 job even though he longed for the diversity and excitement of a freelance photographer.
Happy is not a word most people use when being let go from a job. But when Reebok and Gary were forced to part ways after he photographed Lance Armstrong, a Nike sponsored athlete, for Runners World, he did a little dance since he could now pursue the career he always wanted. And judging from his portfolio I would say he made it, wouldn’t you?
Bio
Gary's fascination with photography began early on, as a kid growing up in Virginia Beach. He was inseparable from his camera, mostly shooting his friends skateboarding and surfing. This experience helped Gary hone the ability to capture fast paced action. Gary eventually moved to Vermont and quickly became one of the most respected photographers in the snowboard industry.
After his first son was born, Gary settled down and began working for Reebok where he developed a signature environmental portrait style shooting athletes for the company's biggest campaigns. Gary left Reebok in 2006, teamed up with photo representatives John Kenney and Ed Varites, beginning his career as a freelance commercial photographer.
He has shot iconic campaigns for clients such as Nike, Adidas, and Coca Cola. He's working with the industry's finest creative, even collaborating with Peter Jackson on imagery for District 9. His award winning work has been featured in PDN, Creativity, Communication Arts, Graphis, and Archive. Gary enjoys doing his own retouching whether it's for a personal project or one of his clients.
When he's not working in the studio, he can be found spending time with his family, coaching soccer, building props for his personal shoots, or snapping candids with his Canon G-series point and shoot.

Working in film labs, managing Reebok’s photo library, becoming their full-time photographer, he always had a 9-5 job even though he longed for the diversity and excitement of a freelance photographer. </p> <p>Happy is not a word most people use when being let go from a job. But when Reebok and Gary were forced to part ways after he photographed Lance Armstrong, a Nike sponsored athlete, for Runners World, he did a little dance since he could now pursue the career he always wanted. And judging from his portfolio I would say he made it, wouldn’t you? </p> <p></p> <p><strong>Bio </strong><br /> Gary's fascination with photography began early on, as a kid growing up in Virginia Beach. He was inseparable from his camera, mostly shooting his friends skateboarding and surfing. This experience helped Gary hone the ability to capture fast paced action. Gary eventually moved to Vermont and quickly became one of the most respected photographers in the snowboard industry.</p> <p>After his first son was born, Gary settled down and began working for Reebok where he developed a signature environmental portrait style shooting athletes for the company's biggest campaigns. Gary left Reebok in 2006, teamed up with photo representatives John Kenney and Ed Varites, beginning his career as a freelance commercial photographer.</p> <p>He has shot iconic campaigns for clients such as Nike, Adidas, and Coca Cola. He's working with the industry's finest creative, even collaborating with Peter Jackson on imagery for District 9. His award winning work has been featured in PDN, Creativity, Communication Arts, Graphis, and Archive.
