Race for the gold: The Perfect Rembrandt Challenge

執筆者:Profoto

The Race for the gold moves into its fourth chapter with the perfect Rembrandt — a lighting challenge rooted in one of the most iconic portrait lighting styles of all time. Defined by intentional contrast, sculpted form, and a subtle triangle of light beneath the eye, Rembrandt lighting balances drama and restraint to create depth, character, and emotional presence.

Using Profoto lights and light shaping tools, photographers from around the world explored how light and shadow create mood, depth, and story. As the fourth step in the six-month Race for the gold, this challenge invites photographers to refine their craft while competing for $2,000 USD in Profoto gear and moving one step closer to the ultimate grand prize.

Meet the jury

Every challenge in the Race for the gold is reviewed by photographers who understand lighting at the highest level. For the perfect Rembrandt challenge, submissions were evaluated by Abdulai Sesay, Chris Knight, and Chris Fain— three creative voices with deep roots in lighting, storytelling, and education.

Together, they selected the image that claims the fourth win in the Race for the gold.
